Hollyhocks are short-lived perennials or biennials that frequently reseed establishing colonies in the garden. They provide a sense of Old World charm with their tall spires sometimes requiring staking and heart-shaped leaves. They are sometimes referred to as Althaea in catalogs.
Direct sow 1/4-1/2" deep in fall, or start indoors in late winter or early spring. Or direct sow outdoors in early summer. Plant ¼” deep but needs light to germinate. Soaking seed overnight aids germination.
