Big bluestem is a bunching perennial grass with blue green stems 4-8 feet tall. It is also known as Turkeyfoot, since the seed head looks like a turkey's foot. It provides cover for many bird species and is a larval host for the Dusted Skipper and Delaware Skipper. Big bluestem grass is a native, warm season perennial grass that makes a good ornamental grass because of its attractive foliage and height. It is easily maintained, just cut stems to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear. Drought tolerant. Provides erosion control via an extensive root system.
Stratify seeds for one month. Sow at 1/4 to 1/2 inch depth and keep consistently moist. Can take 4 weeks to germinate.
