Native, clump-forming, upright grass that in good soil can be aggressive. Reaches a height between 2 to 5 feet and width of 1 to 2 feet. Easily grown in moist to wet, well-drained soils in part sun to part shade. It is fairly tolerant of shade, especially for an ornamental grass. Good choice for patio containers. Flat, drooping seed heads that hang from arching stems.

Direct sow 1/4 inch deep in the fall, or start indoors after 60 days of cold moist stratification. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, at about 70°F until the seeds germinate. Transplant when 2-3 inches tall. Will self-seed.
