Texas Hibiscus is a woody-based, herbaceous perennial, native to the southeastern United States. Plant in full sun to partial shade; prefers mostly moist to occasionally wet soils. Tolerates pruning, and sports large, bright red flowers on new growth from mid-summer to fall. From seed, plant will flower in second season from mid-summer until cold weather. Taller plants may need staking.
Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks at 70 degrees, before last frost date, or direct sow when soil has warmed. Scarify and soak seed in warm water for about an hour. Surface sow. Transplant seedlings to 1 gallon pots, then harden off and plant outdoors after last frost. May self-sow.
